Why I let my 12-year-old daughter dye her hair blue

Would you let your 12-year-old get bright blue highlights?

I did! And I’m proud of Sarah. She’s her own person and she knew exactly what she wanted.

I’m no stranger to bright hair myself, as anyone who knows me well can attest, but even if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t hesitate to say yes to this. It’s hair. It grows out. And it’s such a personal and fun way of expressing your personality!

I know it’s not for everyone, though. I have friends whose kids aren’t allowed to dye their hair at all, or who have to stick to “natural” colors. And that’s OK too. Sometimes, that’s a simple matter of cost, or of school rules (something we, as homeschoolers, get to avoid worrying about!)

See more of our family’s crazy hair – and other yes-saying decisions – on Our School at Home.

(And while you’re there, check out the ways I’ve been reminded to be grateful for what we have – even in the face of family mini-emergencies!)

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

My name is Joan and I'm a lifelong Yorker. Throughout high school and college, I swore I was getting out of here as soon as possible. Now, a few years later, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be. I love my town, and I hear every day from readers who love their towns, too. So please, connect with me and let's share what makes life in York County great. I'm here to help you enjoy this place as much as I do!

If you can’t dye your hair blue when you’re 12, when can you? Good choice, Joan!
