York County Libraries offers Food for Fines program

Food for Fines at York County Libraries

York County Libraries’ Food for Fines program kicked off Nov. 26 and runs through Dec. 7. (SUBMITTED)

If you have a few cans of pumpkin or green beans left over from Thanksgiving, put them to good use — for every nonperishable food item a patron donates through York County Libraries’ Food for Fines program, the library will deduct $1 from his or her late fees.

Food for Fines has a history of success with York County Libraries — in February, the program collected nearly 4,700 food items and distributed them to 12 area food banks. This year, the program runs Nov. 26 through Dec. 7.

What can you donate? Suggested items include canned fruits and vegetables, tomato sauce, soup, cereal, rice, beans, macaroni and cheese, juice, peanut butter, and canned meat like tuna, chicken, and salmon that don’t require refrigeration prior to opening. The libraries will not accept out-of-date food, dented or rusted cans for this food drive.
