February Birchbox review: Couture La La and the bold color of Wild Cactus

Lots of cool items in this month’s Birchbox.

I love, love, love this month’s Birchbox. It doesn’t take me long to sample everything inside. The little surprises are simple ways to change my routine — and some items in this month’s box really pushed the bounds for me.

Beauty Protector — Protect and Detangle

Great for all hair types, this nourishing elixir performs seven hair-healing functions. Among them: locking in color, adding shine and instantly detangling. Full-size, $21.95.

This little potion smells amazing. It’s got a coconut, tropical, warm sort of fragrance and after a few quick squirts on my wet strands, it already felt like my hair was baby soft.

Color Club Nail Polish in Wild Cactus

It took some getting used to, but I liked this color.

Shoo away winter blues with this on-trend emerald polish. Full-size, $8.

I loved the color when I saw it, but I was nervous after the first few strokes of polish were actually on my nails. The emerald color is beautiful, but not one I wear on my fingers very often. I was close to saving this as a toe nail polish when I thought, Screw it. I’m going to give it a try. I spent the entire day with the polish on my finger nails and within a couple hours I had warmed up to it and really liked the unique splash of color.

Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Beauty Balm

Dr. Jart+ BB cream is some of the best I’ve tried.

From the brand that brought BB creams to the U.S., this gold-standard formulation has mineral SPF 25 and a satiny, matte finish. Full-size, $36.

I love Dr. Jart+ BB cream, but I had never tried the Black Label before. When first applied, it looked a little ash-colored until it warmed into my skin and created a great base for powder and lip gloss before heading to work on a Saturday afternoon.

Juicy Couture — Couture La La

Roll out the red carpet for this new scent, a stunning mix of mandarin, red currant, lily and orange blossom. Full-size, $19-90.

I’m picky about fragrances so you know this is good when I adore it. I know I’m going to run out of this sample quickly, so I’m tempted to splurge and buy a full-size bottle. The fragrance is pleasant and warm, but not overbearing. It’s something I could wear everyday or even save for special occasions.
