Many people take pride in a pristine lawn. Weeds — dandelions! — are considered the enemy. But Grace Lefever, founder and owner of Sonnewald Natural Foods in North Codorus Township, says those folks are missing out.

“There are things growing around you that are so valuable and yet we call them weeds,” Lefever said. “People ask me, ‘Grace, where do you get your energy? You never stop.’ And I say, it’s from my greens.”

Lefever has been leading Weed Walks — strolls through her gardens and around her home that unearth these hidden treasures — for more than 40 years. Now, she’s releasing a DVD and 48-page field guide to share her knowledge.

Weed Walk DVD featuring Grace LeFever“I was getting to the age where I didn’t know if I was going to be able to keep doing this,” said Lefever, who turned 90 in December. “The field guide was the most important thing. That way, they can take this outside with them.”

Some the “weeds” Lefever focuses on are chickweed, purslane, malva, lamb’s quarters (“better than spinach,” Lefever said) and day lilies.

Lefever will be at Sonnewald Natural Foods, 4796 Lehman Road, North Codorus Township, from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, to autograph and sell copies of “Walking with Grace” and talk with customers. The DVD and field guide combo is $19.95. For details, call Sonnewald at 717-225-3825.
