Happy National Park Week! If you missed the first few days (the week technically runs April 20-28), never fear: Today through Friday, admission the National Parks — all 397 of them, nationwide — is free.

National Park Week offers hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs and families an opportunity to explore these national landmarks.

If you’ve never really explored all Gettysburg National Military Park has to offer, head west in advance of the huge crowds expected this summer for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The Eisenhower National Historic Site is another great option close by.

If you’re focused more on nature than history, Catotcin Mountain Park in Maryland is only about an hour’s drive from York. I pass through it often on my way to Virginia (home to my alma mater!). Catotcin sits just north of MD-77 and is home to 25 miles of trails — including a handful of scenic vistas. And, just south of MD-77 is Cunningham Falls State Park, with a lake and beach area open for use in warm weather.

Of course, York County is home to plenty of Pennsylvania State Parks. But if you’re looking to expand your horizons a bit — or revisit a favorite spot like Gettysburg — take an afternoon and celebrate National Park Week.
