Drinking sangria on the patio is about as outdoorsy as I get.

But that wasn’t always the case.

As a kid, I was golden brown each summer from hours of splashing in the pool every day.

I would sit in my mom’s garden under a canopy of leaves picking tomatoes for dinner.

I rode my bike to the lake with my best friend and camped with my family.

Somewhere along the way, I began to turn lobster red when the sun hit my pasty skin.

And now, I’m pretty sure I’d miss air conditioning too much to set up camp somewhere for the weekend.

After college, I decided to start a garden plot to rekindle my green thumb.

I tilled, weeded, watered and mulched my way to a handful of fresh veggies.

It felt good to play in the dirt, but when I moved to Fairview Township two years ago, I had even less green space.

At one point during a heat wave last summer, my boyfriend came home to find me in a lawn chair on the sidewalk with my feet in a kiddie pool.

Don’t worry: This year, I’m thinking of investing in a pool membership.

Regardless of how in tune you are with Mother Nature, this issue focuses on all the ways we can embrace outdoor living.

If you’re looking for ways to get your hair off your neck, check out styles from Kathryn Hufnagel of Salon Blu Studio of Design in Windsor Township on page 7. Hufnagel takes the tried-and-true ponytail to the next level.

Digging the idea of gardening but surrounded by concrete? We talked to a local landscaper about going vertical. From creative container gardens to porch-friendly fruit trees, we’ll show you how to make a (tiny) backyard oasis on page 20.

When making a splash this summer, remember: Safety first. Local experts help you dive in and get ready to teach your family the rules of the pool on page 26.

You’ll also notice a very special section beginning on page 32: Smart magazine’s

venture into the world of weddings.

Brides to be — and guests with save-the-dates wallpapering the refrigerator — will appreciate all the bridal advice we have to offer.

You’ll find stories on what to wear — whether you’re walking down the aisle or you’re the mother of the groom; what to buy; how to save; and what the latest trends are.

Whether you’re celebrating the warm weather, a new grill or your daughter’s

engagement this season, we hope you’ll let us help you plan the party (seriously — we’ve included tons of great tips from Amy Herwig, owner of Party Belles, on page 10).

Best wishes for a beautiful home, a happy family and a healthy you this summer.
