The new summer sexy is the crop top. Paired with a high-rise skirt or pant, it can be the perfect way to look hot while still being comfortable.

When we asked readers what they thought of the trend, the majority said crop tops are a fashion not. But, we’d like to share some tips on how to make the crop top work for you — in a more modest way.

It’s true that the crop top isn’t for everyone — the best looks work for athletic builds or thin frames.

The trick? Less skin is more. A sliver of┬ámid-drift skin is all you should reveal to pull off the sexy look. (Check out the photo of Zooey Deschanel) Going strapless is for the self-confident. Stop at that — you don’t want a crop top with a plunging neckline or additional cut-outs — keep it classy, not trashy.

The best tops hit below the bust and above the belly button. I really like Topshop’s Aztec Crop Tee at Nordstrom. It’s $24 and can be paired with Topshop’s High Waist A-Line Skirt, $68.

How to wear the crop top:

Avoid crop tops that look more like bras (like Selena Gomez’s choice at the premiere of “Spring Breakers”). Your top shouldn’t be putting your chest or tummy on full display.

Pair it with a high-rise pant or skirt. Your belly button shouldn’t show.

Don’t wear it to work. Yes, a blazer does pair well with a crop top and a high-waisted black pant. But, tummy skin is not professional.

Do wear it after work, on the weekends or on vacation. A high-waisted maxi skirt with a crop top looks great for a trip to the beach.

It should be fitted. You don’t want your top to look like you cut-off the bottom of an over-sized T-shirt.

Buy an outfit, not just a top. Because crop tops sit differently on every body, you want to make sure your top/bottom combo plays well together. Trying pieces on in the dressing room might be your best bet. If you like to shop online, try choosing a bottom piece from the same designer.
